Innovation in Mixed and Laminated Steel Structures

The subject is mainly organized as a workshop, combined with some very intensive theoretical sessions to provide students with the necessary knowledge to approach the course project. It is a subject of structures in which the student is provided with the basic tools and knowledge necessary to face an architectural design with metallic and mixed structure with guarantees.

The program of the subject begins with some sessions rather theoretical in which the behavior of steel as a material is explained and the bases that allow an analysis of metallic and mixed structure are introduced that allow subsequently design, analyze and quantify a certain structure of course .

The concepts that make up the theoretical basis of the subject are:

  • Steel as structural material, behavior and qualities.
  • Analysis of metallic structures (light) • Analysis of joints and design, welds, screws and more complex.
  • Introduction to the mixed concrete-steel structure.
  • Innovation in solutions of mixed structures in the market.
  • Integrated analysis of structures with the objective of architectural design.

The most practical part of the course is developed by using the Metal3D software from CYPEINGENIEROS, together with other linked software. The course methodology starts with a joint challenge, that is, some project conditions in a site (normally, a real project) in which they have to solve a certain structure using metallic and mixed typologies. During the course, the student designs, analyzes and evaluates their structure design in which everyone competes to win at the end of the mass optimization level: the project with the smallest amount of steel wins among all of the course.

At all times structural analysis is linked to architectural design, emphasizing its importance to achieve high degrees of architecture. The analysis of the structural behavior in “light” structures is decisive in the design phases of the architectural concept. Students verify their structures under tension and deformation according to current European standards and regulations (Eurocodes).It is important to emphasize that no previous structural knowledge is required to study this subject since, in spite of having a very compressed syllabus, the course is very intense and the bases of structural design and verification in steel are explained from scratch. The student finishes the course managing the specific software for three-dimensional calculation in steel and mixed and knowing how to perform the necessary checks to validate a structure in the design phase.
